Heroin on prescription!
Should Heroin Addicts be given Heroin on prescription?

It's an old one but still relevent today and possibly more so than ever. Idealy, all Heroin Addicts should be offered the opportunity to attend drug rehab where they have the chance to deal with their 'demons' and change their lives completely. However, that is not the case. Methadone maintenance provides a safety net for some addicts but the truth is, many still use Heroin as and when they can, and of course, they have the Methadone addiction as a bonus. Would it not be better, and possible more cost effective, to prescribe Heroin when drug rehab is not an option?

Methadone
Methadone is abusive and keeps addicts small and dependent on both the drug and the services that provide it. It also makes the abusers, the pharmaceutical companies, millions of pounds so they will never give addicts heroin instead; there's a risk with heroin that an addict will achieve abstinence, the chances of that with long-term methadone maintenance are minimal as the withdrawals are too severe, and the organ damage too acute.

In response to Tanya
It is so easy to point the finger and say junkie but that is what they are.... its all down to choices. I do sympathize but I also am disgusted. Today my 12 & 7 year old children found all his foil etc inc the burnt... kicking off at my eldery mother cause she refused him money twice this week he is also on methadone. He phoned me today to say this would be the last time I hear from him he was ranting on about my mum and sister. I can't cope with this anymore I have my children to think about he knows I will back him 120% if he helps himself but he has to do it not me... but at the moment the future seems to be very bleak for him... I am just waiting for the police knock to tell us he is dead. It will break my heart in two on the other hand I lost him to heroin a long time ago.
I hope & pray the next time I post on this wall is to say he has sought help & on the road to recovery.
My heart goes out to every family member on here who is in my situation also to the former addicts who have fought & won this battle I would like to say good on ya it took some courage to fight back. :) this is one battle I can not fight for him

Heroin
It is so easy for people to point the finger and say "JUNKIE" but unless u have been there u dont know what it's like. most people who take heroin, hate doing it! it's like a no win situation. u do it jus to feel normal in the end not to get out of ure face.
It is an evil drug but once it gets u ur fu@ked! It is possible to give up but it certainly is Not easy! I wish everyone fighting this all the luck in the world seriously.

any drugs
I don't think that heroin should be given on the nhs same as I am digusted that alcoholics get money for the daily allowance. My father and uncles were alcoholics I lived with this all my life now my brother is a drug user. Nobody made them drink or take drugs and they were well aware of the dangers. I have witnessed what the affects this has also its continued to rip my family apart the lies deceit etc just to get the fix. They say addiction is an illness I personally do not believe this theory but if this I think that rehabs should be for a fixed term so that all support is there 24/7 before they come out the patients should be eased back into society with help of getting a job & home sorted. But its up to that person if they wanna be helped. Heroin on the nhs is not dealing with the problem and would make it acceptable of which its not. At the end of the day they are junkies and alchys. I resent these drugs has it has ripped my life up and many others up. I wont get my Dad or uncles back but I just want my brother back.... he has the support from me and my mother he has threatened to smash her house up and to hit her when she wont give him money. I have given many life lines to him but I dont think he will ever sort himself. I love my brother dearly but I dislike him for what he has become and that is is own fault

support&best wishes to all dependants& co dependants
I have just lost a very good friend aged 22yrs to heroin He started at age 17 and after being put on a drug programme which included methadone and other pills to control anxiety attacks etc he coped for sometime and even found employment albeit only for short periods He was put to a rehab centre miles from home away from family & supporting friends this was supposed to be for his alcohol abuse but they rapidly detoxed him from his methadone and pills I find this astonishing, he said he suffered with leg cramps & aching bones
he was a very nice caring & considerate human being and the I am going to miss him deeply .I feel there is not enough support& guidance for the carer if I had a better understanding of what he was going through I could have been more sympathetic .I also believe we should stop categarising people as junkies so we can safely write them off .Anyway best wishes to all who are struggling with this terrible affliction .
regards ackie

Maintenance scripts
I have been addicted to codeine and dihydrocodeine for years.I went to a Drug Unit for help, they offered methadone or buprenorphine,I was on the latter for three months,it made me ill and I stopped taking it,reverting to codeine.I have never known such awful withdrawals,in spite of the large amount of codeine I was using. It would have helped me if they would have prescribed dihydrocodeine instead, but they will not,the excuse being that they think you will sell it on the black market,so no chance for heroin. The real reason is because they want that one dose a day control.

coldturkey
moonleo, i will keep you posted. the diazepam i have decided to reduce but rapidly. My relationship ended recently and i have a 2yr old daughter im not willing to put her through what i put my sons through and action speaks louder than words. Im still staying with my ex and daughter and am quite distraught at the breakup.

Re: Cold Turkey
Just wanted to give some support to 'stu70' with the cold turkey. Not sure it's the best way to stop using but sometimes it can be the only realistic choice. However, I would strongly suggest that you at least consult with your GP before you cut out the Subutex and Diazepam. As I am sure you are aware, both of these drugs are very powerful and the sudden cessation of them will cause extreme withdrawal symtems.
If you decide to go ahead with the 'Diary', it would be a very useful piece of therapy for yourself AND others - should you decide to publish the content. I, for one, would like to hear how you are progressing.
Good luck.

cold turkey
Ive been on 8mgs of subutex for the past 11 months, plus 20 mgs of diazepam scripted, amphetamine and cannabis daily. Ive been in and out of treatment and my relashionship has ended, people, quite rightly have had enough, so i called my dad last night for help, something he has lacked doing in the past but is capable of doing more than just telling me to call anytime, i felt let down, im also finding it hard to get funding. So last night i made a decision to stop completely without anyones help, cold turkey, and have started a diary. All after my conversation with my dad, i felt something just went snap, if i can do this, then anything is achievable.

methadone use since early 1970s
I was put on methadone ampoules in 1973,when I was 21 years old.I have been in and out of Residential clinics, and have not met one single person of my age who has suceeded in coming off the drug.It is more painful to come of heroin, but at the end of 7-10 days, you feel almost human. Not so with methadone,if someone comes off they usually take benzodiazepines or alcohol. You never feel`right` even after a year or more. You can`t sleep properly, feel on edge, and generally`flu like`.The longest I stayed off was 2 years, but half way into that time,my doctor prescribed valium, then I drank for a while, until I re-registered.If people want,or maybe need heroin, then surely its better to give them it,not this awful drug, methadone.(often sold on the streets so people can buy very sub-standard heroin).

people should have the option to get dia morphine on script because it is cleaner and it would cut back on crime
