Been working in this field for many many yrs. Don't know why is still amazes me how difficult it is to get the "Carers" to get help or supported funding. We have just opened a new rehab in Oxfordshire for Healthcare Professionals with Addictions and/ some Mental Health Issues. The only one in the country, but still people are so ashamed to "own up" and ask for help and employers not willing to admit there is a problem Especially nurses. God, it makes my blood boil that even after all this time, doctors and dentists have "got their act together" but we nurses are still in the "dark ages" and remain the "handmaidens" of the Health Care System. Having worked for many yrs in the NHS, I've seen how disgustingly we treat "our own". I have known many good nurses, counsellors etc who were too afraid to ask for help for fear of rejection. Doesn't seem to have changed. Hope people will come to our place and feel the healing here. |

A word to the wise.
Be extremely wary of individuals or organisations suggesting that they can help or 'refer' you or your lived one to rehab, as their practices are based on receiving commissions and NOT the clinical requirements of the client or a match to services.
Independent referrers are rife in the UK and should be outlawed. They suggest they are therapists and/or counsellors, that they have the 'experience' to help, and can assist you find the best rehab - all lies. They are interested in you or your loved one as a lead and potentially an income stream.
If you really need help, seek the advice of a professional that is bound by their trained ethics; a psychiatrist for example. Any 'referrer' that says they work in the private sector is only after your money and could not care less where you go as long as they receive a commission. The more established and clinically recognised treatment facilities and hospitals (The Priory, Cygnet, etc) will not work with referrers because of their unethical and greedy natures.
Beware of these people. They are not interested in your health, just your money.
One other idea would be to approach BACP, FDAP, both national associations of QUALIFIED and REGISTERED therapists - more than willing to assist you find help without any interest in your wallet.
Please take notice of this if you are considering getting help. |

I am a recovering heroin and crack addict... I am currently on 60mls of methadone and on benzodiazapines to help me cope with anxiety and depression and sleeplesness. I have been trying to get into some sort of rehab or detox for 3 years now but have had no support from the proffesionals dealing with my case... I have no money so i cant afford private rehabilitation??? I am relly desperate... I have come down from 160 mls of methadone to 60mls by my self. I have had open heart surgery and had to have 2 of my main valves replaced because i had a bacterial infection on my heart due to using a dirty needle one day while injectinng heroin. I have stayed clean off illegal drugs for three years now and i just feel like i am loosing hope and the will to carry on because i cant seem to get off the last of the methadone because the withdrawl symptoms affect my heart so harshly... yea if there is anyone who could offer advice i would be eternally greatfull... yours sincerely...mitch carter |

hello, i have recently met a man who when i first met i didn't realise had a drink problem, but as the days go by the signs are there, he lies about drinking, he hides alcohol around his flat thinking that i wont see it and is just generally drunk all the time, the problem i have is i know that getting off alcohol is the worst out of all the addictions, its the worst cluck of them all, and it worries me that if i did leave him one of two things would happen, he would carry on drinking and eventually die or he would try and come off it himself and have a really bad time.....i am mentally exhusted but i really cant just leave him because i have very strong feelings for him and of course would feel very guilty if anything did happen to him and i hadn't helped, should i suggest that he go to rehab or counselling or just sit him down and have a chat, he has been very drunk recently and he's been violent with me and abusive but i still care for him and realise that it was the drink doing that to him, so i am in need of advice and would appreciate if you could help thanks |
