Substance Abuse

Drug rehab and alcohol rehab will always consist of some form of substance abuse counselling. A substance abuse counsellor will be on hand to provide addiction counselling that can help to break the bonds of addiction. They will delve deep into the psyche of the individual and attempt to understand exactly what they are going through and how the problem can be solved. No addiction is the same and everybody has their reasoning for drinking copious amounts of alcohol with no regard to their health or the potential trouble they are causing for those around them. Dealing with a drug or alcohol counsellor can be an incredibly traumatic experience, however.

The Role of Addiction Counselling

Substance abuse counselling plays a massive role in the curing of any addiction. What has to be remembered is that addictions don't just arise because the individual happens to enjoy what they are doing. Contrary to popular belief, most addicts don't enjoy what they are doing. In fact, it makes them feel horrible about themselves and they hate it. The reason they abuse alcohol and drugs is because the memories that they have are even more painful and they need to eliminate them.

What a substance abuse counsellor will aim to do is to uncover all of these traumatic experiences. Those who undergo alcohol and drug rehab have to be prepared to reveal everything about themselves. There are no secrets within the world of alcohol and drug rehabilitation. People who aren't completely open and honest will often have a far lower chance of succeeding and getting off of their addictions for good. Substance abuse can only be cured if the health care expert knows everything. That's the art of addiction counselling.

An alcohol and drug counsellor will combine this sort of addiction treatment in a number of different ways. There will be the session where the patient is spoken to on an individual basis, but there will also be group sessions where the group will be led and will be encouraged to reveal certain snippets of information about themselves.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality does exist within alcohol clinics and drug clinics. There is generally very little confidentiality when it comes to not revealing anything at all. Each professional is bound by a strict code of secrecy, though, that states that they won't reveal anything without the prior consent of the patient. If they are unable to do that then they won't be working within the business of addiction treatment for long.

Nobody is compelled to reveal anything that they don't want to. Substance abuse counselling is not about pressuring anybody into speaking about something that they don't feel comfortable with. It's about building up the confidence of the patient until they have no issue with speaking about it freely. It's actually a sign of progress since patients that are silent in the beginning will be speaking at length about their personal problems towards the end of the treatment program.

Treatment Plans

Actually treating the addiction itself comes after counselling. Speaking to a substance abuse counsellor can only go so far. This doesn't solve anything and is actually just the prelude to the real treatment plan. Every single person is different and has requirements that vary radically. They won't be able to just concoct a universal treatment plan for each individual. Any alcohol counsellor or drug counsellor will have to take the user's individual needs into account.

With any treatment plan most alcohol and drug rehabilitation programs will look to avoid the use of drugs as much as possible. Drugs don't really solve anything and it's why one of the six principles of provision on the UK has stipulated that it's unacceptable for a health care professional to treat an individual's alcohol or drug addiction exclusively through the use of drugs.

Where drugs normally come into play is in the beginning. They are rarely used for curing an individual's addiction and are, instead, there to help ease early withdrawal symptoms and to prevent any accidents. Those who are severely addicted can actually be putting themselves in serious danger if they decide to go cold turkey right from the start. Heroin addicts who go cold turkey are notorious for experiencing significant issues.

Treatment plans are all about preparing the necessary coping techniques that are going to prevent any relapses. The substance abuse counselling itself will serve as the removal method for the trigger. Once the trigger is exposed and eliminated it's just a matter of preventing any dissention back into drug or alcohol abuse. Alcohol and drug rehab will approach these triggers in their own unique ways because, as previously mentioned, each and every patient has different needs.

Coping Mechanisms

Substance abuse counselling is more than just about discovering those issues that drove people to addiction in the first place. What a substance abuse counselor will be looking for during alcohol and drug rehab is the behavioral coping methods that are going to prevent any devastating relapses that will eliminate all of that good work. Just some of the treatment methods are shown below.

  • Escaping the situation. If anybody offers drugs or alcohol then escape from their presence immediately. It will stop the cravings before they become too strong to resist.
  • Delaying the cravings by attending to other tasks. Cravings are strongest in the beginning. Studies have shown that after just a few minutes they are reduced to such an extent that most addicts can resist them without a problem. It's just a matter of procuring this minor delay.
  • Substituting the good feelings. There's obviously some redeeming quality that each addict sees in their chosen poison. The desire will be discovered and then a suitable substitute will be thought of. It really depends on the appeal. In the case of smoking many people just love the feeling of a cigarette being fitted between their lips. Alcoholics may love the warm feeling that they get from drinking a lot of it.
