Do You Have an Alcohol Problem?

Many people do not realise, or choose to ignore, the fact that their drinking may have become more than just social drinking. There are many who drink alcohol every day just to unwind after a long day at work or a particularly rough day at home with the children. However, when it gets to the point where you feel that you cannot cope without that alcoholic drink or two each night, or when you feel bad if you have not had a drink, you may actually have a problem.

Alcohol addiction is not an overnight affliction. It is something that occurs gradually. Many individuals will start by having a drink or two at home at the weekend, but then this may develop into a drink or two each evening. As the body becomes more tolerant to the effects of alcohol, the individual may require more in order to get the same effects. If you think you are starting to drink more, maybe it is time to consider that you may have a problem.

Questions to Ask Yourself

  • Do you feel guilty when you have an alcoholic drink?
  • Do you try to hide the amount of alcohol that you drink or hide the evidence?
  • Have any family members or friends expressed concern about the quantity of alcohol you are drinking?
  • Did you lie about the amount of alcohol you drink when questioned by family members?
  • Do you need an alcoholic drink to feel better or to help you relax?
  • Do you think about alcohol when you are not drinking?
  • Do you often drink more than you intended to?

If you have answered yes to any of the questions above, maybe it's time to consider the possibility that your drinking may have crossed the line from moderate drinking to an alcohol problem. If alcohol is causing problems in your life or is affecting your quality of life, you need to get help.

Signs of an Alcohol Addiction

There are some signs to look out for which could indicate you have a problem.

  • drinking even though it is causing problems in your work and home life
  • neglecting responsibilities at home or work because of alcohol
  • missing certain commitments because you are suffering from a hangover
  • forgetting events that occurred while you were under the influence of alcohol
  • getting into trouble when under the influence of alcohol - i.e. getting arrested for drunken behaviour
  • drinking to self-medicate after a bad day - many people will reach for alcohol every time they find situations even a little bit stressful
  • needing more and more alcohol in order to get the same effects
  • feeling shaky or ill when you are not drinking
  • finding it difficult to sleep at night
  • suffering from extreme mood swings and irritability
  • suffering with a loss of appetite as well as vomiting and nausea
  • wanting to stop drinking but feeling ill every time you try.
Are You in Denial?

Denial is common among alcoholics. They will not want to admit they have a problem, even to themselves. Some will find the idea that they have an alcohol addiction preposterous, and will furiously deny it to anyone who even suggests it.

Some alcoholics are in such denial that they will lie to themselves and others about how much they drink. They will say that others are exaggerating their problem and will often blame others for their drinking. If this sounds familiar, then you may have a problem.
