Alcohol Rehab Centres

Designated alcohol rehab centres are the places where alcoholics are able to curb their alcohol misuse and to build a better future for both themselves and those they love. Checking into these alcohol services isn't easy as it takes a lot of will power to first admit that there's even a problem. Once the sufferer can get past this then it's just a matter of getting used to the setting as it's sure to be a place that they've never experienced before.

Who Runs Alcohol Rehab Centres?

It depends entirely on the treatment centre in question as to who runs it. There are privately run alcohol addiction treatment facilities and those that are run by the state. The difference comes in who runs them. The state is the one who runs the public facilities as part of the public health care units or special initiatives that has been set up. Private facilities are run by health care companies that may or may not specialise in alcohol treatment centres.

It's easy to find out more about the company in question that runs a facility as there's usually sufficient information on the rehab centre's website. Take note that the individual or company that runs a centre shouldn't influence the decision on whether to check-in to it or not as all alcohol services have to be able to match up to the rigorous standards put in place by the government-run Department of Health.

Private or Public?

Private health care facilities are infinitely superior to their public counterparts. For this reason, it's strongly recommended that, if possible, alcoholics seek treatment at these facilities. The major reason why these are superior is that there's not a massively long waiting list. The problem with the public facilities is that their waiting lists tend to run into months. Alcoholics who have less severe problems will have significant issues with these addiction treatment centres as they are always going to be at the bottom of the waiting list. Private facilities are open to all who can pay the entrance fee.

Furthermore, it's also well known that the best alcohol addiction counsellors will choose a rehab clinic that's owned by a private company as they will have far superior prospects in one of these facilities. The tools that they have at their disposal to carry out their jobs are normally better than those found within state facilities, and it's for this reason that they believe they can provide better treatment at one of these clinics.

The only issue that some individuals may have with private facilities is the fact that the patient has to pay for their treatment. Those people who have cash flow problems may be cut off from these locations.

Seeking Treatment

Individuals who need to go to an alcohol clinic in order to seek a cure for their alcohol misuse should consult their local doctor before making a move. This is because doctors are able to determine the best course of action for the patient. In the case of those people who require urgent treatment at one of the many available alcohol rehab centres it may be necessary to go to hospital to make sure that they are in good enough health. Failing to have these checks carried out could lead to serious problems when the inevitable withdrawal symptoms arise during the treatment process at the alcohol clinic.

What doctors can also do is provide a recommendation. It's a well-known fact that any waiting lists can be circumnavigated with an urgent doctor's recommendation. That's precisely the reason why those with high alcohol dependencies can jump the waiting lists and get the alcohol addiction treatment that they need.

Health care professionals tend to also shed some light on the type of treatment that will work best. They may believe that the individual can cope with regular sessions that they walk in to. Another suggestion could be that they follow a program of residential alcoholism treatment where they will actually stay in the facility for a minimum of three months.

Programs

Programs will generally last for about 12 weeks for the large majority of alcohol sufferers. Once the residents graduate they are directed towards sessions that they are expected to attend every week, or multiple times a week. For those with higher alcohol dependencies these programs could last significantly longer. Those who have chronic alcoholism issues could even stay within these facilities for years. It's up to the patient as to how long it takes for them to become confident enough to go back into the outside world.

It has to be said that the length of the program and the activities that are held within the program may differ depending on the facility that's chosen to obtain alcohol rehabilitation at.

Treating Alcoholism

Alcohol services at a rehab clinic will come in a wide variety of different forms. For the purposes of this section a residential alcohol treatment facility will be used as the example. Other institutions, where the patients don't stay in, use the same treatments, but on a lesser scale.

The major activity will involve one-on-one counselling. Counselling is carried out in a safe environment with an addiction counsellor who is specially trained at getting to the heart of the issues that caused the sufferer to turn to alcohol in the first place. It's often the place where addicts relive their most harrowing experiences in an emotional tempest. Nobody is forced to admit anything until they feel ready, so it shouldn't be something to be scared of.

Group counselling is a lesser form of the individual version as fewer secrets are divulged and it's mainly about creating a comprehensive support system that can help to encourage abstinence. The group system is particularly potent as the main reason why many addicts haven't sought help in the past is because they believe that nobody is there to help them and nobody cares about them. Sessions are often led by former alcohol addicts who have successfully come through the institution, as well as who have successfully maintained their abstinence over a number of years. Witnessing a success story often provides the inspiration that certain people need to motivate themselves to keep going.

Within residential alcohol rehab centres the patients are encouraged to do something constructive with their time. It's not just for the purposes of keeping their minds off of their withdrawal symptoms, although that is a major part of it. Instead, it's designed to provide a creative outlet where they can learn new skills and to prepare themselves for going out into the outside world. Activities that are commonly found within residential facilities include cooking, painting, sports, and life skills classes.

Walk-in facilities may not have these additional activities at the centre. Alternatively, they may just have calling stations where interested parties will be pointed towards classes in the local community.
