Misconceptions That May Be Standing in The Way of Your Loved One and Recovery

If you are in the process of trying to encourage or motivate a loved one to finally take some action and end their addiction problems, you may find that they are unwilling to accept your help. Even if this person has conquered the stage of denial, he or she may still resist your support options, such as recommending an alcohol and drug rehab.  A rehabilitation centre might sound a logical option to you as you know that it can significantly benefit the affected individual. However, many addicts do not access these services for a number of reasons.

It may be the case that they refuse to attend an alcohol and drug rehab because they have not fully accepted that there is an issue with addiction, or it could be that the person is just frightened of the thought of rehab. In situations like this, the little push that might be required is that of staging an intervention.

What is a Drug Intervention?

A drug intervention is a structured and resolution-focused process that is used to persuade an addicted individual to seek help and support to beat their addiction. Loved ones will often use the intervention to show an addicted family member how his/her addiction is having a detrimental effect on the family and others around him/her.

For an intervention to be successful, though, the addict should not feel as though he or she is being confronted or interrogated. This person should see it as an opportunity to finally accept the help that is being offered to him/her and take the crucial first step on their journey to recovery.

In many cases, an interventionist will be present to assist and act as a guide throughout the whole process.

Common Misconceptions

Below are the most common misconceptions that could stand in the way of your loved one getting the help he or she requires to overcome their addiction. Many are merely the excuses an addict will come up with to avoid rehab. Nevertheless, regardless of any of these, it is incumbent upon you to do everything possible to get the individual to seek help:

Rehab is ‘Too Tough’:A common view many addicts will have is that alcohol and drug rehab is too difficult and that they will not be able to handle it. Entering a rehab clinic for the first time is a massive step, so it is natural to feel nervous. However, this does not mean that it will be impossible, and although many think that rehab will be a terrible experience, in reality, it is designed to be as comfortable an experience as possible. To truly get the most out of an alcohol and drug rehab, the addict must be determined and motivated.

Rehab Doesn’t Work:If loved one has been to an alcohol and drug rehab previously, he or she may have gone in with a defeatist attitude, which obviously led to failed treatment and an eventual relapse. Nevertheless, there are numerous methods to recovery and just because one of these options did not work does not mean another treatment option will not.

Relapse is Inevitable:There is never a cast-iron guarantee that one will remain sober for the rest of their life. Addiction is a ‘relapsing illness, which means there will always be a risk that an individual will need to rehab and treatment a number of times before achieving long-term sobriety. Remember, not every method works for everyone, so one that will not work does not mean giving up. Although relapse is not uncommon, it does not mean it is inevitable, so this is not really an excuse. Those that are committed and motivated to staying sober can eventually achieve this.

A Sign of Weakness: Many addicts will feel that asking for support will be seen as a sign of weakness and will therefore not seek help. This is linked to the denial of addiction and can mean the addict does not yet understand how severe his or her illness is. It is essential that the individual recognises that getting the support required is a sign of strength and willingness. The weak thing to do in this situation is to continue abusing the drugs or alcohol and battle the addiction alone.

Hopeless: If an individual has been battling an addiction for a long period of time, he or she might start to feel hopeless and come to the conclusion that nothing can help them. Back when addiction treatments were limited, many individuals felt this way because, as we mentioned above, no single addiction treatment works for everyone and there were just not enough facilities and treatments to help everyone. Nowadays, there is a broad range of treatments available to help individuals overcome most addictions. No rehab centre will ever accept the excuse of ‘I’m a hopeless case’.
