Addiction is a lonely illness but, just as with any illness, it requires treatment. Those who suffer from addiction often face a tough journey to sobriety, and many will want to make sure they do not ever have to go through rehabilitation more than once.
Completing a programme of rehabilitation is something to be immensely proud of and staying clean is the objective. However, for some addicts, it may be much easier to be clean while in rehab but once they are back in the real world and faced with the temptations that are all around them it can be difficult to stay clean. Avoiding relapse is something most recovering addicts will want above all else and, thankfully, there are a number of ways that will make this easier.
Avoid Temptations
Relapse is always going to be a risk for any recovering addict but especially in the first days and months after completing a rehabilitation programme. Many recovering addicts will believe that they will never touch drugs or alcohol again after successfully completing their rehabilitation programme, believing that they can be around certain substances without giving in to temptation. However, this can be dangerous, especially in the beginning, so it is better to avoid temptation altogether. Stay away from people and places where there may be triggers. If possible, try to avoid getting into situations that would have previously caused you to reach for a particular substance.
Create a Support Network
Those with addictions tend to surround themselves with other addicts and they will avoid spending time with those who they feel are pushing them to face their problems.
Once an individual has completed their rehabilitation programme, it is vital that they create a network of positive influences. This may mean attending support groups where other recovering addicts are in attendance. Family support is also important when it comes to successful recovery, so try to surround yourself with individuals who you can speak to when you feel as though you may be heading for a relapse.
Keep Busy
One of the biggest triggers for relapse is boredom. Recovering addicts will often sit thinking of the times when they used if they are bored. They may glamorise it and will not remember the bad times or the reason they sought help in the first place.
By staying busy every day, there will be less time to think about the particular substance you were addicted to. Hobbies are a great way to keep busy and many recovering addicts will take up exercise such as running as a way to take their mind off the substance they may be craving.
Always be Aware
One of the biggest difficulties for people in recovery is the fact that they may stop worrying about the possibility of relapse. It is important to realise that those who have suffered from addiction will always have the potential to relapse. Continuing to attend support group meetings is a great way to keep a person aware of the dangers of relapse.
