What Are The Success Rates?

When people contact us looking for rehab options for themselves or a loved one, they are sometimes sceptical as to whether rehab actually works or not. Some even ask us for statistics regarding the success rates of the different kinds of treatment options. We will get to the statistics in just a moment. In short, however, we can say that rehab does work among those who are committed to it.

We cannot stress enough how necessary the commitment of the individual addict is. No rehab programme, regardless of its quality, will be effective for long-term abstinence if the recovering addict is not 100% committed to achieving and maintaining sobriety. It is true what the experts say: no addict can truly be helped unless he or she wants to be helped.

Now, let’s get to the numbers.

In 1995, the Department of Health’s National Addiction Centre released the results of a study that showed 47% of the drug addicts receiving residential treatment remained abstinent five years after completing their programmes. Among those receiving community-based services, 35% achieved five-year abstinence.

In the nearly 20 years since, additional studies have shown similar numbers. However, a study published by the NHS’ National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse in 2012 showed even better results. The survey looked at the rates of every private clinic across the UK and found that the best performing facilities achieve success rates of between 60% and 80%. The downside is that the least performing facilities were struggling to achieve 20% success.

It is important for us to discuss why some of the private clinics have such poor success rates. However, the fact that the best clinics demonstrate success rates of 60% or better clearly proves that residential rehab does work for many people.

Mitigating Factors to Consider

A careful analysis of the 2012 NHS study shows a number of mitigating factors that directly affect the success rates of UK rehab clinics. For example, clinics were analysed and rated based on number of factors:

  • the percentage of clients completing treatment
  • the percentage of clients being positively discharged
  • the percentage of clients being negatively discharged
  • the percentage of clients dropping out before completing the programme.

For the purposes of clarity, let us discuss the positive and negative discharge. A client who is positively discharged is one who has completed a treatment programme by adhering to all of the programme guidelines from start to finish. An individual who is negatively discharged either did not finish the treatment programme or did so with some resistance.

The success rates of 60% or better were found among those clinics with a high percentage of clients successfully completing rehab and being positively discharged. Among those with the lowest performance numbers, the highest rates of negative discharge and dropout were also observed.

What does this mean to you? It means your attitude and commitment to getting well is the single most important factor determining whether you’ll succeed or not. You see, even among those clinics with the lowest rates of success, they still enjoyed remarkably high success among those clients who were 100% committed.

What’s more, the success rates enjoyed by the best private rehab clinics are many times better than the rates achieved through NHS and community-based services. The 2012 report demonstrates as much. Simply put, you stand a better chance of achieving abstinence after five years by undergoing rehab at a private clinic.

Why Private Treatment Works

Over the years, drug rehab experts have affirmed, repeatedly, that residential treatment at a private clinic works better than any other treatment option available. Moreover, when combined with post-treatment 12-step participation, the chances of success are even greater. There are five specific reasons this is so:

  • Environment – Residential treatment at a private clinic is conducted in an environment that is free of the distractions of everyday life. In a sense, addicts are completely insulated from the outside world so they are able to concentrate all of their energies on getting well. Community-based services just do not offer this opportunity.
  • Ownership – The treatment provided through residential rehab forces the addict to take ownership of his or her circumstances. Without anyone or anything else to blame, he or she must come to terms with the fact that they alone are responsible for changing their addictive behaviour.
  • Treatment – Private clinics tend to use a bespoke treatment model rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. The ability to custom tailor a treatment plan enables clinic staff to achieve maximum benefits from every therapy chosen.
  • Support – Residential treatment offers a level of group support not available through community-based services. Keep in mind that every addict receiving treatment at a residential facility is part of a group that is constantly in one another’s presence, 24 hours a day.
  • Aftercare – Statistics show that aftercare is an important component in achieving long-term abstinence. Recovering addicts who do not receive appropriate aftercare are 10 times more likely to relapse within one year. Private rehab clinics include aftercare as part of their treatment services in most cases.

It is hard to deny that rehab works among addicts who are committed to it. It is also hard to deny that residential rehab at a private clinic offers a better chance of success than NHS or community-based programmes.

It is our policy to recommend private residential rehab as the first and best option. We work with clinics throughout the UK to provide the treatment drug addicts need to get well. We can help you if you are currently struggling with a substance abuse problem.
