Help for Drug and Alcohol Problems

If you are experiencing problems as a result of your alcohol or drug use, or if you are drinking or using drugs to cope with existing problems, our National Addiction Treatment & Rehabilitation Directory contains over 700 addiction treatment services that may be able to help you when you decide to do something about them.

Before using this database of addiction treatment services, it might be an idea to narrow the search by asking yourself two questions. Firstly:

How serious are the problems?

Addiction is generally considered to be a progressive condition which if left unchecked, will continue to get worse with time. The typical route to full-blown addiction starts with experimentation, occasional recreational use, regular use, habitual use, dependant use/addiction. There are many factors that contribute to the onset of addiction which, in each case, is different. For this reason, effective treatment can only take place once these factors have been identified. Problems relating to drug and alcohol use can be experienced at any point along the addiction route.

Rehab Helper does not want to convince anyone that they are an addict or alcoholic. For the purpose of seeking help, it is only important for an individual to be aware that problems exist, and to have the desire to do something about them.

This can be achieved in different ways depending on the nature and extent of the problems. For example, if a problem is recognised early enough, counselling, or even good old fashioned advice, might be sufficient to help the person to overcome the issue. At the other end of the scale, medium to long-term residential addiction treatment in a drug rehab centre may be required to address the problems associated with many years of drug or alcohol abuse, and addictive behaviour.

When assessing the extent of your drug and alcohol problems it is useful to to consider the following points:

  • Do I drink or use drugs to feel normal?
  • Am I able to control the amount I drink or use once I have started?
  • Do I think about drinking or using when I am not?
  • Have I ever tried to reduce or stop my drug or alcohol use?
  • How do I feel when I am unable to drink or use drugs?
  • What impact does my drinking or using have on my relationships with my partner, children, parents, employer, friends etc?
  • Have I ever committed a criminal offence as a direct, or indirect result of drinking or using drugs?
  • Do I like myself when I drink or use drugs?

An honest consideration of these points should give you an indication as to the extent of your drug and alcohol related problems. The second question you need to ask yourself is:

What am I going to do about them?
