Types of addiction treatment and rehab programme in West Sussex

You can receive treatment for drug and alcohol addiction in treatment centres. They offer two main options for receiving your addiction treatment. These are outpatient treatment in West Sussex and inpatient treatment in West Sussex. We will explain the differences between these two options for the remainder of this guide.

In the UK the two main choices for rehab are inpatient residential rehab and outpatient programmes. Unfortunately, Inpatient residential rehab is rarely funded by the NHS, however outpatient programmes are available throughout West-Sussex on a self-referral basis. Inpatient residential rehab has significant advantages over outpatient programmes. For example, in inpatient rehab the individual is provided an enclosed environment, away from any temptations. This allows the individual the opportunity to detox from alcohol as safely as possible.

Outpatient addiction treatment (day rehab)

Outpatient treatment is the slower option of addiction treatment that predominantly uses group therapy and detox in its treatment programmes. We describe this as the lower level of support because you continue to live at home during treatment. This means that you only attend the rehab centre for your treatment appointments; this is why it is also referred to as day rehab. It can be challenging for some people to complete drug and alcohol addiction treatment at day rehab because of the low level of professional contact. After each of your appointments, factors in your lifestyle could interrupt your treatment.

Inpatient addiction treatment (residential rehab)

Inpatient treatment provides a much higher level of support because you live in the addiction treatment centre to receive your treatment. By living at the treatment centre, you have access to support throughout the day, which can improve engagement with the treatment programme to achieve a greater transformation. It is also referred to as residential rehab and will provide all of the amenities you require for a comfortable stay in a calm environment. This includes your meals, living facilities, and areas to relax.

The ability to remove yourself from your usual lifestyle is often the key to completing a treatment programme successfully; we always advise clients to consider inpatient rehab where possible. At UK Rehab, we have rehab centres in West Sussex offering inpatient treatment. You can be reassured that our staff provide non-judgemental therapeutic support and are professionally trained – often with first-hand experience of addiction.

Why inpatient rehab?

Choice of CQC results

We understand that it can be overwhelming when choosing an inpatient rehab facility. However, one area that can support your decision making is the CQC website. The CQC regulates all NHS, private health and social care providers in England by completing inspections and providing ratings based on their findings. They score providers based on the quality of care provided and will inspect rehab centres providing outpatient treatment and inpatient treatment. You can look at the CQC ratings of your chosen rehab provider to help your decision making.

Mixture of therapies

At UK Rehab, we provide a mixture of therapies in our inpatient treatment programmes. These include detox, one-to-one therapy, group therapy, family support programmes and conjoints. Using a variety of treatment options creates a holistic treatment programme that targets all areas of addiction, with the aim of creating long-lasting change. Once the detox has addressed the physical part of addiction, the remaining therapies begin. One-to-one therapy can help you uncover the root cause of your addiction and teach you healthy coping strategies. Group therapy provides a sense of belonging where you can meet like-minded clients and receive peer support which can be an invaluable addition to your treatment.

Family support programmes

You may find it difficult to inform loved ones about your addiction treatment and recovery process. However, involving your family and friends is a great way of extending your support system to help you continue your recovery outside at home. At UK Rehab, our family support programmes are included in our treatment programmes. We offer information and advice to families so that they can understand what you are going through and speak to a therapist about any ordeal they’ve experienced from the addiction.

Conjoints

Conjoints focus on family unity. They are meetings held at the rehab centre between you and your family and aim to repair any harm to your relationship. We understand that relationships can be challenging in a variety of ways, and addiction often plays a part in causing harm to your loved ones as well as yourself. Due to this, our staff can help to facilitate these meetings to help initiate communication.

What should I expect from a detox in West Sussex?

A detox is the process of abstaining from the addictive substance until it is no longer in your system. This is the first treatment you should expect to complete following your admission to rehab. In response to your body getting used to functioning without toxins, you may experience some withdrawal symptoms.

Medical detox

A medical detox is the process of detoxing whilst taking medication prescribed by a doctor. This may be required to help manage your withdrawal symptoms, depending on the severity and tolerance of your addiction. Often the more drugs or alcohol that you take result in stronger withdrawal symptoms. You can receive a medical detox for a drug detox or alcohol detox, as the medication acts as a substitute for the harmful substance that you are abstaining from.

Withdrawal symptoms can range from hallucinations, confusion, shaking, and nausea, but the staff at UK Rehab will be available around the clock to support you through this.

If you are unsure whether you need a medical detox or would like to know any more information, you can call or message our welcoming team, who will explain anything you’d like to know and put you at ease about any concerns.

Drug and alcohol rehab programme

Treatment programmes can vary in duration depending on the provider and type of treatment programme. At UK Rehab, we use the 12-step programme, which usually requires a residential stay of two-to-twelve weeks. However, you can extend this if you feel you would benefit from additional support. This recovery approach is based on a series of steps to accomplish, which you will complete as you embark on your one-to-one therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and group therapy. Non-12-step programmes may only use single therapies within their treatment programmes, which may not work for you or address all areas of your addiction.

Is rehab free?

Our UK Rehab inpatient treatment programme can only be accessed through private funding, but some healthcare insurance companies may cover this cost with their policies. There are some free addiction treatment services that can be accessed via the NHS, but these will mainly offer outpatient treatment and are unlikely to include a medical detox. You can make a self-referral to your GP to access these services, but the waiting list can be up to eight months. The charity Turning Point may have some free inpatient beds, including a medical detox. But due to service demand, admission spaces are highly competitive.

The downside to free services

Free services ensure that addiction treatment can be accessible to anyone, no matter what their financial situation is. Unfortunately, there continue to be spending cuts in the public sector, which limit the number and variety of services available. If you require free addiction treatment, you should expect long waiting lists from referral to admission, which can lead to your addiction worsening before help is available. As free services only offer outpatient treatment, the support available is limited to the time you spend at day rehab, meaning that you will not be able to break free from your daily distractions.

What happens after a rehab programme?

After you have completed a rehab programme, you should feel extremely proud of yourself. However, we must advise you that recovery is ongoing, and following rehab, you may still require support to transition to your new lifestyle. Fortunately, at UK Rehab, you will receive ongoing support through our aftercare programme.

Aftercare programmes

Our aftercare offers continued support to all our clients through a variety of methods. You will receive information and advice from our professionals, follow-up calls and group therapy for one year, including access to our supportive alumni community. This network helps clients to keep in touch with each other following rehab, maintaining peer support and social gatherings for the rest of your recovery.

Support groups

Support groups are another free resource in the community that can help you to remain accountable for your progress and build new relationships with other people recovering from addiction. Some popular groups include Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and SMART Recovery.

Long-term recovery from addiction

Ongoing support can be crucial in your long-term recovery from addiction. Completing rehab treatment is a huge achievement, but some clients find ongoing challenges after rehab. Each client’s recovery is different, so no matter how much help you need, the staff at UK Rehab will always support you.
